I know my friends are secretly hoping that football season goes by very quickly because that's all they hear from me lately. No, I'm not reliving my life through my child, because I never played football-guess you're not surprised! If I were reliving my childhood, I would be obsessed with what cheers the Prep cheerleaders were doing. However, I did love football season when I was in high school! It's funny, because in a small town everyone went to the football game on Friday night. It wasn't a question IF my friends were going to the game on Friday night, that was a given. I can still remember the smell of the chicken houses in the cool night air when had a home game in SoSo, MS. It may sound disgusting to those of you who grew up in the city, but it was just a smell that we country girls got used to. At our games, I could look up in the stands that were filled to capacity and tell you every person's name.
I returned to Mustang stadium three years ago and I thought then that I wanted Zachary and Leigh Ashley's high school years to be as memorable as mine. So, that's my agenda--to get as involved and do what I can to make that possible. My parents did that for me, it was just in a different way. See, they worked so hard to make sure that Marla and I had everything we needed, as well as a whole bunch of stuff that we actually didn't "need". They weren't able to be at the football games in person, but I knew that they were there for me in spirit! In the restaurant business, Friday and Saturday nights are the big nights and I've written in earlier posts how they've done all of the cooking together since I was in 5th grade. They always provided the mini footballs for us cheerleaders to throw at the games and did whatever else they could do to support the school. Never, ever did I feel that I didn't have anyone "there to watch me". I just thought I knew how blessed I was, but I actually had no idea to what extent until I grew up.
I look forward to Zachary coming home and telling me how he did at practice. There are days when he's pumped because he had a great practice, then there are days when he needs a little extra encouragement because as he says...."he stunk it up". I am so blessed to have such a great relationship with him! He wants me to come to the Pep Rally every week and he's always updating me on the latest talk about the game. After the game, I look so forward to him finding me on the field with that big sweaty grin. After the Pearl game, Andrew actually got him to stop and let me take a few still pictures of them. I can always count on Andrew letting me take pictures! I got some great ones that we can use next year in the senior video.
Speaking of Andrew Glaze, I will also embed a video that shows that the final score should have been 24-14. Please excuse my yelling! I'm just glad he cut out my response that followed the bad call. We had some home cooking going on and Keith found proof in our video that the line official was wrong. I glad we won the game, because it would have been terrible to have lost because of one of several bad calls that in this case cost us a touchdown. It was a huge win for the team because they have to listen to people say that "private school boys aren't the athlete that public school boys are" and that they can't compete. No matter what Prep does, there will always be those who will continue to argue about that issue.
