I'll backtrack a bit to catch up...
After the experience Thursday night following surgery, Mark was much more comfortable Friday. Dr. Blalock increased his pain pump meds so that it would give him a small amount if he pushed the button or not. That did seem to help manage the pain. But the greatest blessing of the next two days was the nurse on day shift. Her name was Ashley and I can't say enough good things about her. She took such good care of him and we hit it off. He did what he could to beg her to remove the cath, but she was really good explaining why that wouldn't be a good idea. She told me that he had something ordered for sleep and I needed to ask the night nurse for it around 8:00. Later that night, he was given ambien and I was so looking forward to a night's rest for both of us. Around 1:30 that morning, I woke up to 4 nurses standing over him. Apparently, he had removed his oxygen during the night and when they came in to check his vitals, his oxygen level was dangerously low. They put a monitor on him and it never happened again.
The next morning (Saturday), I noticed that his mood was different. His pain was being managed, but the cath was driving him crazy and he wanted to eat. Dr. Ross was on call and they said to expect him to make his rounds early. Well, that didn't happen. I walked downstairs to get something to eat and he called the room while I was gone. The nurse was in the room and talked to him as well. He wasn't coming by there, but agreed for the cath to be removed and he could have food. I thought this may help Mark's attitude (that he had suddenly developed), but it didn't. He wasn't himself. He was like someone who just drank a fifth of vodka! He was seeing things, talking crazy and determined to go outside! Ashley was really good dealing with him. She knew I had my hands full He hadn't gone to the bathroom since the cath was removed, so Ashley said they would have to drain his bladder if he didn't go in 6 hours. She came in and said that it had to be done, but she was going to let the night nurse do it. Mr. C went to Bravo's and got us dinner and she ate with us. I guess she hated to do something like that to him after eating and visiting with us.
